Effects of composition and phase relations on mechanical properties and crystallization of silicate glasses

Abstract Crystallization, mechanical properties, and workability are all important for the commercialization optimization of silicate glass compositions. However, inter‐relations these properties as a function composition have received little investigation. Soda‐lime‐silica glasses with Na 2 O‐MgO‐CaO‐Al O 3 ‐SiO compositions relevant to commercial manufacture were experimentally studied multiple liquidus temperature viscosity models used complement experimental results. Liquidus temperatures fabricated measured by gradient technique, Rietveld refinements applied X‐Ray powder diffraction (XRD) data devitrified glasses, enabling quantitative determination crystalline amorphous fractions nature crystals. Structural investigated Raman spectroscopy. Acoustic echography, micro‐Vicker's indentation, single‐edge‐notched bend testing methods measure Young's moduli, hardness, fracture toughness, respectively. It is shown that it possible design lower‐melting soda‐lime‐silica without compromising their crystallization properties. Unlike modulus, brittleness highly responsive in notably low values can be obtained wollastonite primary phase field: an effect more pronounced silica field. The bulk crystal subjected devitrification at lowest industrial conditioning indicate melts conditioned close within compositional ranges fields cristobalite, wollastonite, or combinations.
